What you visualize in your expectations will shape what you achieve.
This is the part of the process that I have found to be the greatest
challenge, because it requires a lot of "unlearning" of past habits and
the creation of new habits that are positive and help you to achieve
your goals. If you can start with a positive mental outlook at a young
age you will have a huge advantage over other people who have developed
a negative mindset.
This is not uncommon because of the way our lives are shaped as we grow
and mature. In our very early years we experience the love
and support of parents, particularly mothers, who encourage their
children to master new skills, such as learning to talk and to walk.
The emphasis is all positive towards achievement.
But as we get older and go to school and experience more of life we are
often subjected to negative influences that create low self esteem and
a feeling that we are not good enough, or even a failure in what we
wish to achieve. This lays the foundations for negative thinking and
negative self-images. These in turn shape our mindset, so that
sub-consciously we do not expect to achieve our goals and thus lay the
framework for self-fulfilling prophecies.
It is
our mindset that operates at the sub-conscious level and it can assist us, or hinder us.
Changing this mindset is fundamental to changing the results we get in life.
Again, childhood is where we learn so much that shapes the rest of our
lives. If it is filled with positive, happy and joyful experiences,
then we can develop this mindset naturally. One filled with
negative, and unhappy experiences can do the opposite. But
this is not a certainty. I know people that always look on the sunny side of
life no matter what happens to them, and I also know people who always
focus on the negative. Some of the happiest people have overcome
enormous obstacles that would put others into a state of depression,
but they smile and laugh and cheer others with their inner strength.
Becoming aware of this and consciously setting
out to change your mindset is an exercise in itself. Again this can
bring us back to the sporting analogy, where coaches can spend more
time on the psychology of the team or individual than on the physical
requirements of the game. In fact, at the highest levels of
sport it is psychology that separates the winners from the losers.
We all acquire habits as we grow and mature. Some of them are
good, but others are negative and impede our progress. The sooner we
recognise the negative influences of these habits and change them, the
better our lives become. There are many authors that focus on
this area of learning and you will find them in the Trading Books section.
There is a spiritual connection I believe in all of this, and which I
may say more about later. I realised this in comments I
read from other traders who have gained their own personal insights as a result
of trading. W D Gann is one I have in mind.
