Courses

Courses I have done and recommend for their professional approach:
  • David Schirmer's Basics of Charting Home Study Course
  • David Schirmer's Advanced Trading Techniques, now called the Professional Trader's Workshop
  • Daniel Kertcher's Options Trading course, Prosperity Power

David Schirmer's Basics of Charting Course teaches the Fundamentals of Technical Analysis and provides you with a proven proprietary stock trading system that has been thoroughly backtested. Graduates of this course are supported by a Forum of like minded people interested in developing their trading skills. Coaching and a monthly Report on the Top 100 ASX stocks are also available to graduates to assist them to develop their self confidence and become profitable.

The Advanced Trading Techniques Course, now called the Professional Trader's Workshop, builds on the knowledge gained in the Basics course and introduces CFD's, Cycles Theory, and Geocosmic trading methods.

Daniel Kertcher's Prosperity Power course introduced me to a set of option trading strategies using Covered Calls and Puts. His teaching utilised his Options Trading game "Call Up and Put Down" which simulated live trading in an entertaining and constructive learning style. He also provides additional more advanced courses that can be studied at home.

Software

Software I use and recommend:

Market Analyst

This Australian software is in continuous development and now includes a Trade Tracker and System Tester as well as Scanning facilities and Portfolio Management. It is available in different packages according to your level of Technical Analysis skills. The software has been developed in conjunction with several Australian Educators and specific tools are available for the strategies taught by them.
  • Professional Edition
  • Gann Analyst Edition
  • Astrological Edition
This software offers tools to cover the charting requirements for Technical Analysts of many different styles, and is designed so that you can tailor it to your personal requirements. A thirty day moneyback guarantee is offered on the product.

The tools are supported by a comprehensive knowledge base that explains each tool and its use, and provides a support base for the customer to solve most common frequently asked questions. Anything not resolved through the knowledge base help system can be submitted to Technical Support for resolution of the problem. I have found them quick to respond and resolve any difficulties that I have encountered.

The software team behind it are working on yet another upgrade. All three editions will be able to do charts in three dimensions, allowing you many different ways of viewing your charts. To see what is coming in October go to: Market Analyst Version 5 Training

IC - Investor

This Australian software is also in continuous development and provides periodically updated Fundamental Data on ASX stocks as well as a broad range of indicators and tools. The point and click approach to applying a broad range of tools to the charts is easy to master and enables the user to get a quick appreciation of the technical position of the stock. It provides a Trade Planner that can be used to quickly calculate expected profits from probable stock price movements in shares and CFD's whether trading long or short. Special tools can be added such as IC-Optimiser and the Elliss Big Money index to improve your stock picks to trade.

Both Market Analyst and IC-Investor can provide data packages for their software. Both offer data from the major stock exchanges. They can also read data in Metastock format if you choose your own data supplier. Using their individual data source will give you faster downloads and processing. I like both packages and usually use them in parallel when researching stocks for trading and investment. The strengths of each package are complementary, and switching from one to the other provides both technical and fundamental information on any stock on the ASX, and the Trade Planner assists by automating calculations. Both incorporate scanners to pick out stocks that meet specific criteria for analysis.

Options and CFD Trading Platforms

The Top 2 Software based Online Brokers as ranked by Barrons are:

Think or Swim
This is the platform recommended by Options University to all their students as the best options trading platform.

Interactive Brokers

The Top 2 Web Browser based Online Brokers as ranked by Barrons are:

TD Ameritrade

OptionsXPress

There are many different CFD platforms available now as more providers enter the Marketplace. This is making it very competitive and most are offering incentives for your business. This can include:

  • A free trial for a short period
  • Free training sessions on how to use the product
  • Free charting packages

In the article "Choosing a CFD Trading Platform"
I have outlined the key issues for you to evaluate a CFD platform. Below are links to well known CFD providers.

MARKETMAKERS

There are differences between Marketmakers, and you should READ the Product Disclosure Statement carefully to identify them. The terms of Service varies with the provider. These can and do change over time. The competition in the marketplace to obtain and keep clients is undoubtedly a major factor in this dynamic market.

  • CMC CMC Markets
  • IG Markets IG Markets
  • GFT Forex GFT Forex

  • CMC is a Marketmaker as the software platform name implies. They have made significant improvements to their platform this year and now provide extensive training and charting facilities to their clients.

IG markets advised that they do support the order placements by buying or selling shares in the market, but that it is not a straight through process and occurs after the initial action is completed.

GFT Forex is a US platform and can offer it via a downloadable program Dealbook 360 or a Web Browser Dealbook Web. As its name indicates it was developed to trade Forex, and CFD's have been added to it. They also provide an excellent charting package for technical analysis when trading. They offer training and additional services such as Di Napoli Fibonacci methods to customers for a fee.

The list below are using a common platform from the SAXO Bank in Denmark with their own "Front Ends". The SAXO Bank platform is excellent and provides a very good range of charting facilities for use by the customer. I am not sure if they offer a Marketmaker model and a Direct Market Access model. This may depend on the particular provider.

DIRECT MARKET ACCESS PROVIDERS

If my understanding is correct then the Direct Market Access providers MAN Financial and E*Trade are using the same platform with their own "Front Ends", but their terms of service may differ.
